I completely disagree with your stance on GFN. Asus shouldn't be charged a licensing fee nor AMD or Intel or gigabyte, etc. Nvidia is providing hardware as a service, and by going through other vendors for the game sales they remain agnostic to the existing licensing agreements. Now if you want to limit play via mobile, I'd understand, except very few titles, even in the indie space get ported over, and in the AAA space it doesn't happen at all. You could make the argument to limit mobile as a publisher, though you would be a disingenuous asshole by doing so. They are going to try to hold Nvidia hostage on this one to extract more money, and that cost will be passed on to us. I'm not an Nvidia favor either. I think they overpriced the 20 series cards, but $5 a month for virtual hardware is extremely reasonable and the publishers are gonna do what they always do: try to force consumers into worse situations to try to extract more money without providing more value, like Rockstar and Ubisoft did with the Rockstar launcher and UPlay.

I'm sorry, but you're just wrong to say that Devs are entitled to a cut of Nvidia's revenue stream on Geforce Now. I BOUGHT the game for windows. It's just thievery to say I need to now pay royalties to play a game I already shelled out big money for.
FRAG aLOT 7 сарын өмнө
That's sad, GeForce Now is actually decent, and something fun to play with. Works better than Stedia, but I guess google has the money to push out GeForce Now, even though Nvidia has the horsepower. Plus this isn't really "another platform" like Stadia is. These are windows machines (VMs) running the same launcher apps (Steam, Uplay, Origin, etc) streaming over the internet to your own PC. It's not like I have to rebuy these games to play them. The premise for these streaming game platforms is to play game at high quality that your home PC (if you have one) isn't able to do. But the games we currently own on Steam, Uplay, Origin, are games we KNOW already run on our gaming PCs so GeForce Now is redundant. You can't buy games though GeForce Now, since you can't install/run other games you own on this virtual machine except for the game you launched from the GeForce Now launcher, even then you still have to install the the game into the VM. yeah it's weird. So you'll have to buy new games on the platform launcher on your own PC, and then try to install it on GeForce Now VM.

1.) You now have to launch & login to GeForce Now. Next you launch & login to Steam. Wait for updates. Click launch on the game you want to play. Login to the game manufacturers software, maybe get your games updates since Steam didn't update it, & then finally get to launch the game. 2.) To use GeForce Now, I have to have a game I purchased ON Steam? What if I'm playing say...The Division 2 on UPlay which I bought from Ubisoft & not through Steam. Can you still play it through GeForce Now or do I have to "add a game" in Steam? 3.) To make using the numbers 1& 2 correct, I was taught you always had to have a 3rd point. Here is my point...a decimal point. .
motox20 7 сарын өмнө
While Nvidia shouldn't have used any games as an advertisement for GFN, they aren't selling any of the games or making money off any games themselves. I understand why the Devs wouldn't want their games to be used in the advertising for GFN, they're still being babies about it... The argument about porting to mobile is shit as well, those ports are usually so different that they're different experiences. How many PC gamers are going to buy a game through Steam or another store and then buy the mobile port? Not many, the mobile users are generally a totally different audience, treating them as the same demo shows the Devs ignorance to their customers.... No matter the Devs position, we have rights as consumers and allowing them to dictate where we can play those game sets a dangerous precedent....

If Nvidia could just go around and pick any game they want on their paid service for free then that would definitely be unfair. It's like Nestle taking water from public sources for free and then bottling it and selling for huge profit. If Nvidia is going to use those games as a selling point then there's value for them in having that game on the service and they should pay for that value in some way. If they were just selling a subscription to a remote pc that's powerful enough to play games and that the users could just install steam on it to play their owned games then that would be a different story. But then they couldn't advertise that service by saying that you could play all these games. It all depends on what you're selling.

@38:48 yes it invalidates their argument because they already got their money when you bought the game. This isn't PSNow where you're playing games you haven't purchased. The perfect solution is that they be happy you bought their game and let you play it the way you want to. This is the bottom of the same cliff we jumped off when people accepted microtransactions and baked in DLC. Pure simple greed of companies wanting money for something you already bought. The fact you even think publishers have a valid argument shows you're on there side because there is no actual argument. This is one sided. The gamer paid for the game but the publisher wants more money. That's not how purchases work.
IRMacGuyver 7 сарын өмнө
If they want to force us to pay for a game on now then we shouldn't have to prove that we purchased it on steam.
IRMacGuyver 7 сарын өмнө
@35:17 there doesn't need to be any paper work. The gamer already paid for the game. Companies need to stop trying to milk money out of people that already paid for the game.

You two kept saying Nvidia was "distributing [developers'] games" withot permission. They aren't distributing anything. You're still accessing through your steam account, which IS licensed. If I install VirtualBox, set up a VM, and play a game by accessing Steam through that VM... does VirtualBox (Oracle) now owe the developer for distributing their game? 'Cause... ≅ Or, hell, if I upgrade from an old potato to a new Alienware (it's a hypothetical guys, breathe), and re-install the game through Steam there. Does Dell now owe them? 'Cause Dell's making money off my desire to play their game at higher settings/resolution?!

pity the Amd A6-6310 apu hasn't been fixed for years its had a constant mouse/screen stutter if you use updated drivers and its been a problem since 2016 and i know hundreds of others with the same exact problem so we are forced to use old drivers which significantly decreases overall performance when we could be experiencing a 30% performance change with newer drivers it really pisses me off that it was never fixed

I would be shockingly surprised if Nvidia is making tons of money of Geforce Now at all. I mean 5$ per user/month? Considering all the hardware, power consumption and so on would clearly make them loosing money instead. So honestly, as this is a service, I dont care about developers. You still can decide as publisher which store you put your game on - but who cares which computer/device it is running? This will just make pricing for Geforce Now increase a lot, because developers want to get paid for being on a premium platform. So they earn money by the gamers and from Nivida. but yeah, greed is always good ! :D

What you don't seem to get is that you are not playing on GFN you're playing on Steam through GFN. All GFN does is provide hardware for a fee. That's like saying I can't rent out my computer for someone to play their games on. The developer has no business here. They're just trying to get easy money out of Nvidia and the End user

I don't agree with your argument that the game is adding value to Nvidia's service, because that's true for hardware too, and they don't get a cut of that. Didn't Tomb Raider encourage people to buy better graphics cards? Does that mean Nvidia and AMD need to profit-share with Square Enix?

My take on GeForce Now: I understand that license agreements are a thing, and legally game developers have certain rights. But I don't care. I'm a consumer, I am the most important person when it comes to dictating how they do business. I refuse to pay for a game more than once. And if they try to force me to, I will refuse to buy any of their games again. It is their job to adapt to me, not the other way around. There doesn't need to be anything legal about it. All that needs to happen is for game consumers to get together and say "No, I refuse to buy a game more than once"
ChillyFilly 7 сарын өмнө

Long Dark dev is a moron, GForce now is not even a "platform" playing a game on GFN is no different than playing it on my own PC, I am not paying Nvidia to get access to that game, I am paying them to access the rental PC I am using to play the said game on. We are paying Nvidia for access to the rental PC, not the games, devs need to get their hands out of our pockets, we buy their game, go away. Profit sharing? For what reason, we already bought their game, they got their money. These companies are backing out due to greed, nothing more

Platform or Service it doesn't matter. With consoles, the game developer pays the hardware manufacturer to be on the platform. With computers the developer offers games without required licensing fees from the hardware or software providers on the system (not counting places like steam). Yet somehow game developers should be able to charge users twice to play a game. The user purchases the game (pays), and then the user rents hardware to play the game on (pays again). That is nonsense. Whats next internet providers get a cut as well on top of already being paid by users for connectivity? This happens with video streaming like with Netflix. However, the difference is that Netflix does not require the user to own the content they stream, only Netflix must have this and the user pays Netflix.

The reason the AMD drivers took so long was the console drivers were a priority and AMD don't have the man-power of a lot of the competition. Not only do the game devs NEED them finalized before finishing up their projects, but the drivers basically had to go through certification for Sony and MS (= a lot of testing). Pretty obvious and makes total sense if you ask me, as the drivers and RDNA2 micro-code for the consoles will be 80% identical to the 6000 series cards and can be back-ported to the RDNA1 cards with a little extra micro-code.

Nvidia sells graphics cards because of the games you can play on them. So long dark dev needs to get his cut on the money nvidia makes because of his game. Better pull your game off of GeForce drivers.
Daniel Rouw
Daniel Rouw 7 сарын өмнө
The mobile port argument from the dev is invalid. Now the developer can get a sale from a mobile user WITHOUT the cost of making a port. More revenue, less work/cost, better compatibility. The next argument that because a business benefits from your product you are entitled to pay is also bogus. People buy groceries, they buy vehicles to bring groceries home. Grocers can't demand profit sharing from car sales, fuel sales, tire sales, insurance sales just because those industries benefit from the sale of food.

GFN is just a glorified virtual machine rental with high end hardware. I think if they (Nvidia) felt like fighting it on behalf of the gamers, they'd win. No gamer is going to be able to play a game they don't already have a license to play - this is just a different computer (virtual machine) where the gamer is permitted to install it. I don't know about all the platforms, but steam, for example, lets you install the game on a hundred computers if you want - but you can only log in to one of them at any time.
Spank Me Zaddy
Spank Me Zaddy 7 сарын өмнө
Nvidia should just be douche bags and rent virtual machines and let you do whatever you want. Watch porn, pirate games, etc. They’ll make there $5 without technically offering a “gaming service”.
Barinthos 7 сарын өмнө
It seems that a LOT of people are forgetting, or willfully ignoring, one very important part of the GFN service....there is a FREE option for the service. Regardless of the 1 hour timer per session, the fact that you can get access to the SAME "hardware rental" as the $5 plan (minus RTX), completely free makes literally every argument about "they're charging money that devs are not getting a cut of" utterly irrelevant. There is absolutely zero money in the equation at that point, so the only logical conclusion for why a dev would pull a title for most people is simple. Greed.

This will be settled in the courts, but if GFN is basically selling rented compute resources, it will be difficult for game developers to argue they should be entitled to a cut for what users run on rented infrastructure(depending on Ts & Cs). Also, expect major IaaS providers like Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft to jump in to protect their business model with lawyers and lobbyists, as this could establish a dangerous precedent it the enterprise space. Unfortunately, if game developers lose in court, they will simply rewrite their Ts and Cs essentially removing real ownership of the software from gamers going forward.

To me it's like actors asking Samsung for a piece of tv sales because there movie was played on it. Simply put if developers want to fund the infustracture to build there own vm streaming all to them. But the value they provide pales in terms of cost of running let alone having built. A gain in costumers for the developer is the bonus to a backed that is provided for free. Nvidia doesn't charge the developer per customer per Nvidia card used to run the game. Two separate markets which shouldn't be a conversation on who gets what money. Nvidia is not selling liscense so anything after that shouldn't be a developer concerned since the devs did not need to add support to make the game run, meaning the build is the same exact build as the PC liscense, so why would you need more money for a feature you did nothing to implement for

We paid the damn game, we are able and allowed to play it on ANY pc that we install it on, we should be able to play it on another screen as well, like a phone screen. For once i fully disagree with you, i cannot agree with you when you say "oh i can understand that they need to get a backup plan in case their pc game fails they wanna have a phone version to have a safety net & revenue". They do NOT need a backup plan, they make billions per year, with a b, like the greedy bitches that they are. The only reason they're doing this isn't to have a backup plan, it's to literally squeeze every bit of money they can out of every person who wants to play their games on a device, $60 per device. If they could make you pay for each hour that you play their game on your pc, they would, even though it doesn't cost them anything cus you run it locally. If the argument is that nvidia is making money off the back of game developers and publishers, then so is Windows, AMD, Samsung, Asus and any component in a PC. Nvidia should just offer a naked service - play any game on our service. And then let the user choose what they want to play. No games list. Just any game. Publishers can't stop people renting PC's.

Not asking the developers for permission for the distribution is incorrect, But if the developers really cared about the audience behind the games then they would allow people to play it on any platform. Playing on Stadia or geforce now or any other platform opens the game up to more of an audience. This benefits these studios as well with more sales. In fact it could be argued that this is better than Steam or Epic games as they take a cut for selling it on their store. Why sell it on their store? Because this opens it up to more of an audience which means more sales. So really games withdrawing from Geforce Now are losing out.

Is there no kick back from nVidia to the developers for this then? It occurs to me that developers wouldn't kick cash out of bed and if the creative world is going to be run through IP then organisations like nVidia should be a bit more respectful. There are arguments around it and it's likely deeper than can be compacted into a summary, but it isn't as though nVidia are short of money, are they? For certain there shouldn't be an argument for IP exposure.. that argument went out the window back in the 80's with pay to play for bands, in spite of efforts in that example by venues trying to get bands to play for nothing.

Should every PC lender, cpu manufacturer, gpu manufacturer, hard drive manufacturer, fan manufacturer, and RGB manufacturer give a cut to games because customers are paying for their products because of the games that these products allow customers to play and encourage customers to seek a system?

Way to go AMD, I already bought an Nvidia card so you're slow burn on getting competent driver support lost you at the very least 1 5700xt sale.

The nvidia cloud gaming thing sounds like a big legal mess. Especially if they have games on it and the developers didn't agree on it and whatnot.

Re GFN, fundamentally what this shows is that the breaking of the basic notion that one owns the game one has paid for is now making possible modes of game play (as a result of improving technology) that create conflict between those who create games and those who play them. One might ask, for example, why should NVIDIA even be running such a service? They make GPUs for PCs; it would be akin to Michelin maintaining steet signs & bridge tolls and being able to decide where one can drive just because one has bought their tyres. NVIDIA is stepping inbetween what used to be a much simpler relationship between the game author and the game player, so no wonder we see tension. Yet after all is said and done, at the end of it the gamer is still left with nothing, eventually none of these games will be playable when the platforms & services close. It's going to be very weird for the future midlife-crisis-40-somethings when they fancy replaying the games of their youth, because they won't be able to. 48:49 - *sigh* Not this again. Capitalism depends on honesty and business in trade. What Apple is doing is not capitalism, that died when the Fed was setup. I do wish people would learn what these various isms were originally meant to be, not what decades of left leaning state education and media has told them it is. What Apple is doing is Corporatist, which is very different, with a degree of crossover into Globalist ideology.

The fun story, is that in the digital age, you dont own any of the games you've purchased. What you do have is a license to play said games on whatever platform you've purchased it on, which according to most EULA's can be revoked at any time for any reason they see fit (worded vaguely on purpose so they can make reasons fit) . Its not like the old days, when you bought a cart, or disk. Game company's couldn't come kick in your door and take your game, nowadays they can just deactivate a license and you either have to purchase a new one, or accept that money is gone. People have this idea that because they've spent money on it, it belongs to them, but rarely read the fine print.

You guys are looking at the Geforce now thing in the wrong light, the developers are talking in terms of what would be considered re-broadcasting, gamers have paid for the game, but they didn't pay for the rights to re-broadcast that to other players and then monetize that. The issue is squarely aimed at Nividia, not the gamers as Nvidia has not obtained the rights to do that re-broadcasting.

With the potential price hikes I'm glad I got my 1 terabyte NVME SSD in January. Now I am tempted to get 16gig DDR4 3200 ram kit to replace my 2400 kit but I also wonder if that speed difference is worth it. Any thoughts?
